Parenting is the hardest job we’ll ever have and yet there is no orientation, no training manual, and little instruction is ever given!
By now I imagine you have heard of life coaching, health coaching, and even relationship coaching, but what about parent coaching? It may sound like just another buzz word in an overcrowded sea of self proclaimed coaches often with questionable certifications and little education, but the profession of parent coaching has actually existed for at least 15 years and continues to grow with credibly certified and educated coaches around the country and across the globe. The Parent Coaching Institute, part of Seattle Pacific University’s College of Education, was the originator of parent coaching in 2000 and sets the highest standards for certification as it is the only graduate-level training and certification program for parent coaches. When seeking a coach make sure to always check their credentials, experience and education.
Parenting is the hardest job we’ll ever have and yet there is no orientation, no training manual, and little instruction is ever given! Parents often feel isolated and uncertain and tend to question themselves as they try to groom their little people to become thriving adults…the pressure is huge and the support is limited. Parents who come to coaching often seek confidence, competence or support through a specific stage of their children’s development or a particular parenting situation. Through client-centered sessions coupled with parent education, parent coaches can assist parents to bridge the gap between where they are and where they wish to be.
Coaching is distinct from therapy. In therapy you often look at the past to understand your being in the present. In coaching you look to the future to guide you in the present and then actively design, and begin to live into, your preferred future!
At CORE Parent Coaching, my Dallas-based private practice, I partner with parents to identify their core values, create their parenting vision, and design effective strategies and solutions to achieve their goals and dreams. The interactive process is challenging yet also energizing and empowering and most importantly…it generates solutions and results.
So who comes to see me, you ask? They are parents like you and parents like me who want assistance, support and guidance as they navigate this uncertain terrain called PARENTING! Some common reasons that clients have come through my door (or phone line) include:
- Parenting a child with learning differences and/or special needs
- Dealing with behavioral issues (strong will, defiance, terrible twos, etc.)
- Dealing with divorce, single parenting or co-parenting
- My child won’t eat and other similar battles
- Should I go back to work or stay at home with the kids?
- Am I doing this right?
Parenting is hard. Preparing little people to become high functioning adults in a crazy world is no easy task for any of us. Though there is still no manual, help does exist…you don’t have to go at it alone! A parent coach can hold your hand through parenting and help you to generate the solutions that will help your family thrive. Visit the PCI to find a qualified parent coach near you.
